Peru Cusco
Location
The city of Cusco, Peru is a city that conserves the
remnants of ancient splendor, through its magnificently
built structures, including its roads and stone bridges,
large production of crops, thanks to the construction of
irrigation channels and aqueducts and huge fortresses.
These have contributed to the obligatory stops on tourists
itineraries.
Any journey through this beautiful city should begin in the
Plaza de Armas, the hea of Cusco, home of the vulnerable
cathedral and chapels such as the Senor de las Temblores,
the Virgen de lo Remedios and the Capilla de la Immaculada
Concepcion, also known as La Linda.
The city of Cusco sits perched amidst the clouds and the
lush Andean greenery 11,000 feet above sea level, an
everlasting legacy to Peru’s rich history.
Many tourists come to Cusco because it is close to the
famous Machu Picchu ruins and the Inca trail. Because of
its high elevation, it is cool at night and sunny yet cool
during the day all year round. This is a great excuse for
seeking out the many markets selling beautiful woolen
sweaters and textiles for which the country is renowned.
Surrounded by the wealth of its Inca history and offering
the comforts of an internationally known town, Cusco truly
is an exciting place to live, enjoy, and learn Spanish.
The School
The school is conveniently located in the heart of the main
centre, only four blocks from the main square. There are
many restaurants cafes, museums and cathedrals nearby.
Classes are held in rooms decorated with typical Peruvian “artesania.”
The school occupies a beautiful and historical colonial home
from the 19th century, right behind one of the
most important sites from pre-Columbian Cusco, the
Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun).
The building houses two full floors and 17 classrooms, an
indoor patio, a video room, an auditorium, entertainment
room, wireless internet access, and an interior plaza. All
this for up to 60 students, who mostly journey to us from
the U.S, Canada, Holland and other parts of Europe. Most
tend to be university students, but we also see independent
traveler, professionals and even retirees in our classes.
Highlights
Experience the festival of Corpus Christi (Catholic even
with indigenous influences) at the beginning of June, or the
Inti Raymi (Theatre spectacle based on Old Inca tradition of
adoration of the sun, the winter solistice) There are lots
of cultural, religious festivals to tae part
in.
Organised trips or activities are offered here also, such
as: cooking classes, dance classes, parties, videos,
lectures and museum trips. There are also a few gyms in
Cusco that allow short term memberships.

Medical service learning program
This is a language learning program run by Academia
Latinoamericana de Espanol in Ecuador-Peru-Bolivia. It gives
medical students and Doctors the opportunity to learn
Spanish while learning about another country's medical
system. Students are exposed to different cultural practices
and traditions and also have opportunities to establish
relationships with others with the shared goal of healing
and serving those in the community.
Programs are offered in Quito-Ecuador, Cusco-Peru &
Sucre-Bolivia. Although each program’s specific itinerary
varies, each program will place you in a variety of health
settings and includes discussions/lectures to give you an
overall picture of the medical practice in Andean countries.
Many past participants on Academia Medical Service Learning
Program were able to “witness surgeries and births, draw
blood and suture, give shots, read films, take histories,
and witness and help with physical exams IN SPANISH."
Each program also includes Spanish classes (some emphasis on
medical terminology), lodging with local families, full
board, cultural activities and some excursions to immerse
you in the culture. We are sure what you learn by
participating in Academia Medical Service Learning Program
will be beneficial and needed in your medial practice in
years to come.
Accommodation
Our host families: Families belong to Peru´s middle
class, although students should take note that living
standards in Peru are generally lower than in Europe or
North America. Family homes are located in neighborhoods
usually no more than a 10 minute bus ride to school.
Participants choosing to stay with a family should recognize
that a certain degree of flexibility will be required to
adjust to the Peruvian customs and way of life.
Apartment rental: There are inexpensive accommodations
that give the school special deals. Not apartments but
apart-hotels. |
